Tips to clean and care your down jacket

A down jacket requires special care to maintain its insulation, loft, and durability. Here’s a step-by-step guide on cleaning and caring for your down jacket:

Cleaning Your Down Jacket

1. Check the Care Label

  • Always read the manufacturer’s instructions before washing.
  • Some jackets may be machine washable, while others may require hand washing or professional cleaning.

2. Pre-Treat Stains

  • Use a mild detergent or stain remover on dirty spots before washing.
  • Gently rub with a soft sponge or cloth.

3. Machine Washing

  • Use a front-loading washing machine (top-loaders with agitators can damage the fabric).
  • Set the machine to cold water, gentle cycle.
  • Use a down-specific detergent (regular detergent can strip natural oils from the down).
  • Run an extra rinse cycle to remove all soap residue.

4. Hand Washing (If Needed)

  • Fill a bathtub or sink with cold water.
  • Add down-specific detergent and gently submerge the jacket.
  • Let it soak for 15-20 minutes, then gently rub the fabric.
  • Rinse thoroughly until no detergent remains.

5. Drying Properly

  • Gently squeeze out excess water (don’t wring the jacket).
  • Tumble dry on low heat with clean tennis balls or dryer balls to restore fluffiness.
  • Air drying takes longer, but ensure it’s completely dry to prevent mold.

Caring for Your Down Jacket

1. Store It Properly

  • Keep it loosely packed in a breathable storage bag (avoid compression sacks).
  • Store in a cool, dry place, away from direct sunlight.

2. Avoid Frequent Washing

  • Over-washing can damage the down’s natural oils.
  • Spot clean minor stains instead of washing the whole jacket.

3. Restore Loft if Needed

  • If your jacket looks flat, put it in the dryer on low heat with dryer balls for 10–15 minutes.

4. Protect from Moisture

  • Down loses insulation when wet. Use a water-repellent spray for extra protection.
  • If soaked, dry it immediately to prevent clumping and odor.

5. Repair Small Tears

  • Use a gear repair patch or seam grip to fix small holes before they get worse.

By following these steps, your down jacket will stay warm, fluffy, and long-lasting! ❄️
